We publish literary fiction, poetry, children's and young
adult books, and creative
nonfiction. If your work falls under one of these categories, we
would be happy to
see a brief sample of your writing. We publish approximately ten
titles each year.
These include two or three poetry titles, and two or more each
of fiction,
creative-non-fiction and children's/young adult books.
We do not accept emailed or faxed submissions or queries. All
queries and submissions must be sent by mail. The text for children’s
picture books should be no more than 1,200 to 1,500 words in length.
You may submit the complete manuscript for a children’s picture
book. For all other genres, please submit a sample of ten poems,
or the first three chapters of a fiction or non-fiction manuscript.
Please include a cover letter, and a self-addressed stamped envelope
for return of your materials. Please note: we do not read or respond
to manuscripts that do not have a SASE enclosed. We accept no responsibility
for unsolicited manuscripts, so please don't send us originals,
or your only copy.
The manuscript should be typed and double-spaced, with page numbers
clearly marked, on white unbound pages. Let us know of any credentials
or experiences that particularly qualify you to write your book,
and include a list of previous publications, reviews and awards
you may have received. If you have access to special markets or
promotional opportunities for your book, we’d like to know
about them as well.
We receive over 2,000 submissions each year, so please be patient.
It takes us several weeks to read and respond to your work.
We accept multiple submissions, but let us know that yours is
being submitted to other publishers and inform us if your work
is accepted
elsewhere.
We publish only Canadian writers.
We do not consider fantasy, science fiction, romance, thriller
or mass market fiction, or rhyming greeting-card style
verse.
