A surprising talent
Collection of short stories proves anything is possible

For many, to write one’s own book of fiction — the great Canadian novel, no less — has long appeared near the top of a bucket list, albeit a massive task that very few ever realize. Even rarer is the surprise unveiling of a hidden talent so developed that one wonders why it took so long for the first book to appear.

Gordon Sombrowski’s What Echo Heard is one such pleasant surprise. Fulfilling his daily office hours as the owner and operator of a Fernie hotel (with extra time taken up in his role as chair of the board of directors for the Alberta Ballet, numerous other artistic endeavours, and long-term involvement with the Fairy Tales Film Festival, founded by husband Kevin Allen), Sombrowski’s “coming out” as author may soon come to overshadow the rest.
